Death on CIM Group construction site

April 15, 2025

The CIM Group is an LA-based private equity firm that has been profiled numerous times on the Private Equity Stakeholder Project (PESP) blog, most notably for its mistreatment of tenants at the Southern Towers housing complex located in Alexandria, Virginia.

Despite instances of public backlash, in 2018 CIM was chosen by the City of Atlanta to re-develop the Gulch, a P-shaped land mass located in downtown Atlanta. Re-naming The Gulch to Centennial Yards, construction on the $5 billion project began in 2020. On March 21st, the Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC) reported that there was a death on the Centennial Yards construction site. Later reports by the AJC reported that the person who died was a 20-year-old Honduran subcontractor Lauinier Bonilla. He reportedly died after falling 19 stories and according to witnesses he was not wearing a safety harness at the time. The construction site reportedly paused working for the weekend following the death.
